What did the Romans eat?
As lots of the Roman homes were made out of wood, lots of the emperors said it was illegal to cook. More wealthy families would have slaves to cook for them. Rich men would normally have meat for supper. They normally eat a very simple breakfast such as bread, cheese, boiled egg or salad. Dinner is served in the late afternoon. They eat meat at the beginning then fruits, nuts, cheese or sometimes a small cake with honey for desert. Sometimes they would eat pottage. Pottage is a thick stew that is made from either wheat, millet or corn. They ate vegetables and fruit sometimes. Lunch was served around noon. Romans would eat ham, salami, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, vegetables or bread.
